Who are we really? Or more accurately, what are we?
Scientifically speaking, you start with the body, we are mammals, with basic survival instincts. But psychologically we are so much more. There is the ego constantly struggling to prevent us from acting on our basic urges (created by the id). What it the id? glad you asked, that would be the impulsive part of you, kind of instinctively constantly wanting a whole lot of different things. Then there is the super-ego. simply put, and so that this does not turn into a long, and unwanted psychology 101 lesson that would be your conscience, though that is over simplifying it.
Basically there is the conscious mind, that rational part of you that rationally thinks, calculates. And the subconscious mind, the hidden innate feelings and desires we carry deep within.
But that is not all, is it? So far it is all about the body, and the mind. What about the spark of life we all have been blessed with. The thing we carry with us throughout our lives, that cause us to see, feel, and sense things beyond our physical limits?
People go into comas, though their bodies and minds seem to be perfectly ok.
The soul, is also a big part of who we are. No matter what religion you come from, or what faith you exercise, it all comes down to the intangible essence that to date remains a mystery.
Some people question the existence of anything beyond what is physically measurable. They cannot know for a “fact”, such a thing as a soul exists. Or God. Or even an afterlife for that matter.
To me, denial is completely impossible. Life has been kind enough to show me things. To take me on wild journeys, where i have encountered many things which i still struggle to understand. Because it has nothing to do with the mind or body at all.
It maybe difficult for some to understand, or even believe. But i have seen things, though not through my eyes. Heard words, but not with my ears. And felt, not through my skin. I have encountered and made a number friends, many of which i cannot even describe.
The concept of “me”, has gained so much depth over the years. I am not simply a guy, taking a walk, i am a combination of all of the above, working together harmoniously to bring out the being that i am, and same goes for all of you.
People have been living more and more in the physical world, in the rational conscious mind, that they are abandoning entire parts of their being. They are not whole.
And if you are not whole, you cannot be happy. If you do not see yourself for what you really are, then you are living a lie. So how do you do that? How do you live a full happy life, one that is whole?
You start by understanding that we are not merely flesh, drifting aimlessly into nothingness. We are more than that.
You are a soul, infused in the flesh and living in a physical world. Your body has physical needs, but your soul also has needs.
When was the last time, you gave your soul something it really wanted?
When was the last time, you sat in silence, completely still and you felt whole, complete, and at peace?
Do you even remember?
Interesting post….good discussion….
The “subconscious mind” is only a theory. As such, any conditions attributed to the so-called “subconscious” are merely guesses or beliefs.
Perhaps we confuse the theory of “subconscious” with the reality of degrees of consciousness. Each degree of consciousness and individual transcends brings her or him to a new level of inner awareness, i.e. the capacity to consciously function within the Oneness of our existence within Creation. Our sense of separation is replaced by binding flow of energy that connects all that exists.
Just a few thoughts….
Thank you Rob, for stopping by and sharing your thoughts. Loved the way you phrased it…
will definitely be looking out for your book.
Thank you and nice to meet you Ahmad….
Same here my friend! That was one mighty thought provoking comment ๐
I noticed you have recently been to the neighborhood. I thank you. But more importantly, it struck me, the 2 particular posts you read and liked. Don’t know why it did, but, thankfully so, for it immediately sent me back to your community and I had the pleasure of living this post through your eyes and your words. Wake Up is an amazing piece of literature, a profound editorial and brilliant display of peace. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us. You are appreciated. I would be honored to introduce you to The Neighborhood so that my neighbors can absorb the beauty of your words too.
Thank you for the kind words and encouragement my friend! Yes i’m guilty of passing by the neighborhood once in a while, and soaking in – the way you put it and i couldn’t agree more – the performance art.
would definitely love the opportunity of the introduction, that sir would be a privilege ๐
Consider yourself introduced. I look forward to a collaboration, but I could not wait for the introduction, I wanted to share ‘Wake Up!’ with the wonderful neighbors, guests and visitors within The Neighborhood, and I believe a few of them will be visiting you.
Much appreciated! Yes i am getting a lot of hits and am enjoying going back and checking out their work…
Really looking forward to collaborating on something, and thanks for the re-blog it made so many introductions, it was a true blessing me passing by the neighborhood tonight ๐

Love your picture it’s so Etherial .
I enjoyed your post very much. The points you made are brilliantly written and expressed. And I think you are right, as a group we are losing that connection to our soul. We are so caught up in the day-to-day survival of work, kids, family, etc that we forget to feed our inner selves, and feeding our inner selves is what gives us the strength and ability to handle our outer selves. The best part, for me, is that it doesn’t take much. Simply standing with my face to the sun and feeling its warmth, or, as I did on Tuesday, going out on my front porch and listening to the sound of the snow is all it takes sometimes
Thank you for the thoughts, and yes i totally agree! it can be so simple as shutting off the phone and closing your eyes and simply listening to your own breath. i just wish more people would see it ๐
Like how you think,,,looking forward to seeing more of what and how you say things and what you may be pondering, I like you wonder about your statements Thanks for posting peace g

EVERYbody can understand this. This is what it’s about and I love the lines drawn which point back to the YOU or ME. Excellent. Two thumbs up. Best explanation you will ever hear.
Thank you! ๐
๐
Who are we really is the question??? But our existence if touches peoples hearts then it really doesn’t bother me:) your just two lines say so much!!! Beautiful.
Thank you ๐

[…] Wake Up!. […]
Thanks for sharing!
Thoroughly enjoyed. We are indeed souls encased in flesh and deserving of acknowledgement and nourishment as such. โค I thank you for an unexpected and welcome read this morning, very much off my usual beaten path. Blessed be!
Thank you for stopping by! and i couldn’t agree more.
๐
A very informed, very true, post. And the bit I bring away from it is that yes, we are becoming so focused on the physical that we ignore the vastness of the spiritual and the world just a shiver beyond our five senses. A world as real and inclusive of us as the one we can sense. Great job, here.
Exactly….spending far too much time on things of little value… thanks ๐

I agree there are things beyond the physical. I think I may go meditate now, thanks for reminding me how important it is!
๐ Glad to be of help!
how long have you been practicing meditation; if you don’t mind me asking?
Though it is difficult to fathom the intangibles that govern our life, but we are always awed and fascinated by the existence of soul, the role of subconscious mind…of course the evolution and existence of human being. Nice article…
Thank you ๐
Really interesting post, keep up the good work! Check out a post I wrote about the eternal soul called ‘Forever?’ I think you might enjoy it:

Hi, I really enjoyed the depth with which you question who we are. We have so much to learn about our place in the cosmos, and the start of the learning journey starts with our inner being. I’ll be back!
Thank you! You are absolutely right…
