At 1:30 after midnight, i find myself sitting in my couch in front of the TV, as i systematically jitter my hands and feet. One by one, first right hand, then right foot. Left hand and then left foot. I close with a good wiggle of the head too, then i start all over again. And the cycle keeps going.
Why did you fall into this nothing short of a bizarre routine? One might ask. And the rational is actually quite simple: there is this damn stubborn mosquito that had been circling around me for the past hour or so, and i find that keeping any exposed extremity idle for more than a few seconds, signals a welcome sign to an all you can eat buffet to the little sucker(s).
I tried everything, at my disposal that is. To get rid of the little pests, but the little buggers just wouldn’t quit. They’re out for blood; my blood. And they would stop at nothing till the mission is accomplished. So what next?
I remember spending nights, fighting for my living room. Red nights marked with the massacres of dozens of mosquitoes, squished against the many different surfaces of the room. The end of these battles are always the same: time is wasted, satisfaction never reached, other mosquitoes; unmoved by the distasteful display of their race’s carcases, still finding their way into my home.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not that lazy as to not find a permanent solution, god knows I’ve tried. But as life would have it, things don’t always go as planned, and my ongoing war with these tiny; yet huge, pain in the ass continues.
Moral of the story? Sometimes, when you have no control over certain things in your life, it might be easier if you would just find a small “wiggle” room. So you can continue to enjoy the things that really matter at that specific moment, rather than obsess and fight battles which you cannot win.
Not that i don’t occasionally enjoy succumbing into this tribal state of mind, where the war ensues, and the battlefield is painted red once again with the blood of my foes…
🙂
