What do you first think about when you wake up? Do you find yourself planning your day ahead, filling in the details, getting worked up while you worry about the things you have lined up? Do you feel yourself getting tired even before you make it out of bed?
Perhaps you have a smart-phone, and first thing you do is make contact with the outside world as you check your emails, and get a head start on your career. You know what they say! “Early bird gets the worm”
Then again maybe you are unemployed, and you start to figure out the errands you need to be taking care of. There could be a million examples, but the bottom line is this, do you wake up with nothing but the future in mind, and what it has to offer?
If the answer is yes to any of the above then you, my friend live in the future. Your world revolves around what is yet to come, when, where and how. And that is no way to live.
But there are also those who like to reminisce. Who wake up thinking back on what they talked about yesterday, and with whom. Those who wonder if yesterday’s meeting was as “productive” as it should have been. Those who question their past actions and choices, and get entranced trying to get their mind wrapped around the lessons learned, And the “what ifs”.
Life, for us human beings flows in a linear fashion. Time rules our universe, whether we feel it or not, in the most drastic of ways. But it does not necessarily have to be that way. Imagine a world, where you conquer time itself. Where you get to do whatever you want, and not have to worry about the past, and the future.
Well such a place exists. And it is called Now. Have you ever lived there? In the present?
It is a magnificent place, let me tell you that. Where the possibilities are endless, and where you make up your own story, while actually living it. There are no boundaries, save that which are set by your own minds.
A friend of mine who reads this blog once asked me to provide practices, if applicable. To help him see things from a different perspective than what he is used to, so here goes:
Wake up, from your daily slumber and infinite loop chasing after a future, or worrying about the past. Experience the present. When you wake up tomorrow make an effort Not to think ahead, not to plan, not to worry, not to be stressed. Instead, just lay there in bed, with your eyes open, as you smile and look at the world around you.
Listen up to the noises around you, try to identify them. Breathe slowly, and steadily, relax. Get up, walk around your house and observe your familiar surroundings. Are they really that familiar to you? If you have a balcony or a window just take a few moments to observe other people running around endlessly. But breathe, and dismiss any and all thoughts about the past and the present. Absorb all that the moment itself has to offer. If you do it right you will feel rather strange, and out of your element. You are no longer used to experiencing the present.
Sure, life needs planning and learning. But does it have to be constant? Does it have to be a never-ending process? All the time?
Are you living in the past, present, or the future? More importantly, are you happy?
awesome!!!
